Judges roar past Lions, 94-51

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team used a huge third quarter to blow things open tonight as the Judges defeated visiting Emerson College, 94-51, in non-conference action in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 2-2.
  • Emerson, 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lions scored the game's first seven points, but the Judges quickly responded, outscoring the visitors, 18-4, over the final six minutes of the first period to take an 18-11 lead after one.
  • The second quarter was the closest of the four on the night, with Brandeis outscoring EC, 21-18, to take a 39-29 lead into the locker room.
  • The Judges were unstoppable in the third quarter, outscoring Emerson, 28-6. Graduate student Shannon Smally (Foxborough, Mass./Foxboro) outscored the visitors by herself with nine points. Brandeis hit 10-of-13 from the field (77%), 2-of-5 from downtown (40%) and 6-of-7 from the line (86%) in the third.
  • With a 32 point lead headed into the fourth quarter, the Judges were able to use their reserves, who outscored Emerson, 27-16, as first-year walk-on Lillie Singleton (Topsham, Maine/Cheverus) scored 10 points in the stanza.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Smally led all scorers with 19 points. She hit 9-of-11 from the field with a 3-pointer, the second of her career. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) added 11 points and six boards, while Singleton and fellow first-year Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) each finished with 10 points.
  • Vaughan and Gresko each grabbed six rebounds as the Judges dominated the boards, 49-20.
  • Ten different Brandeis players had assists in the contest, including four different players with three each.
  • In all, 14 different Brandeis players played at least 10 minutes in the contest.
  • Emerson got eight points from Chelsea Gibbons and seven from Ella Bushee. Mackenzie Bruno paced the visitors with five rebounds, while Olivia Deslauriers had a game-high four assists.
  • For the game, Brandeis shot 54% from the field (37-68) while holding the Lions to 33% (18-55).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was tied for the sixth-highest scoring game in Brandeis history and was the fifth-highest under coach Carol Simon.
  • The Judges had not reached 90 points since December 3, 2019, in a 99-88 overtime win against Babson.
