Gresko goes for 20, but women fall at WashU, 89-59

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Brandeis University women's basketball sophomore Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) tied her career-high with 20 points tonight, but the Judges fell to a hot-shooting Washington University team, suffering an 89-59 loss in a University Athletic Association contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges got off to a decent start, leading after one quarter, 19-18. Gresko and senior Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.) combined to go 3-for-6 from 3-point range to give the Judges the edge.
  • WashU responded in the second period, outscoring the Judges, 17-10, Gresko hit a bucket with 5:50 to go before the break to give the Judges a 24-22 lead. The Bears closed the period on a 13-5 run, taking a 35-29 lead at the break thanks to a last-second put-back by Maya Arnott.
  • The Bears put things away with a 15-2 run to open the third period, taking the quarter, 30-15. They won the fourth, 24-15, to take the 30-point decision.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Gresko scored her 20 points on 5-of-10 from the field, 2-of-5 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
  • She also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to just miss out on her second double-double of the season.
  • Her previous 20-point game came on Dec. 3 against MIT.
  • No other Brandeis player scored more than six points or had more than three rebounds.
  • Junior Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass. / Springfield Central) had two assists.
  • WashU was paced by three double-digit scorers. Jessica Brooks led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Maya Arnott had 18 points and Naomi Jackson added 12.
  • Sabrina DeBello had a game-high five assists.
  • WashU outshot Brandeis, 54.8% (34-62) to 27.1% (16-59). The Bears also controlled the boards, 39-27.
  • The hosts had 10 3-pointers to 7 for the Judges, while Brandeis owned a 20-11 scoring advantage from the line.
