Gresko double-double not enough as women fall at #13/15 Chicago, 80-56

CHICAGO, Ill. – Brandeis University women's basketball sophomore Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) registered her second double-double of the season today, but the Judges suffered an 80-56 University Athletic Association defeat at the hands of the University of Chicago today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges and Maroons were tight through the first period, with UC's Marissa Powe hitting a three-point play with 1:01 left, offsetting a 3-pointer from Brandeis's Mollie Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and giving the hosts a 16-14 lead.
  • Chicago opened the second period on an 8-2 run thanks to a pair of trifectas from Sophia North and Grace Hynes to open up a 24-16 lead.
  • Brandeis's Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass. / Springfield Central) stopped the streak with a jumper, but the Maroons hit on their next four shots to extend the lead to 14 at 32-18 with 5:02 to go in the half.
  • The Judges were able to close back within five on Emma Reavis's (Miami, Okla./Deerfield Acad., Mass.) two free throws that made it 34-29 with 45 seconds to go, but Chicago hit a 3-pointer to close out the stanza with an eight-point lead.
  • Hynes scored nine points in the first four-plus minutes of the second half, giving UC a 47-33 lead with 5:51 to go in the third, and the Maroons never looked back.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Gresko was the only Brandeis player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points, while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Gresko hit just 2-of-11 from the field, but was 8-of-10 from the line to get her 12 points.
  • It was her second double-double of the season and career.
  • Gonzalez and graduate student Shannon Smally (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) each added eight points.
  • Gresko and Reavis both had two assists to lead the Judges.
  • Chicago's Hynes led all scorers with 25 points, including 16 in the second half. She also had a game-high four assists.
  • North added 12 points for the home team.
  • Bella Alfao led UC with seven rebounds, while Hynes and Powe each had six. Powe was responsible four six steals.
  • Chicago hit 10 3-pointers compared to just four for the Judges, while outscoring them 18-14 from the free-throw line despite taking four fewer foul shots.
