Saber sweeps as women's fencing downs Wellesley, 18-9

WALTHAM, Mass. - Behind a 9-0 sweep by the saber squad, the Brandeis women's fencing team defeated visiting Wellesley College tonight, 18-9. With the win, the Judges improve to 18-2 on the season, while the Blue fall to 3-5 on the campaign.

Brandeis was paced by its strong saber squad, as sophomore Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian), sophomore Alex Turner (Lebanon, N.J./Honterdon Central) and senior Jenny Press (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) earned half of the team's points on the night. Six of the nine matches were decided by 5-0 or 5-1 scores, but Turner's 5-4 win in the final match completed the sweep and got Brandeis within a point of victory.

The other two weapons were narrow affairs, with Brandeis claiming the epee, 5-4, and Wellesley taking the foil match, also by a 5-4 score. The epee squad for the Judges rallied nicely, winning five of the last six matches after losing the first three. Senior Caitlin Kozel (Jamestown, R.I./Lincoln School) and sophomore Emily Larkin (Monclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) each won their final two matches for Brandeis, while sophomore Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) was 2-1 in the epee for the Blue.

In the foil matches, Brandeis and Wellesley were tied, 3-3, after six bouts, but the Blue won the final two to earn victory in the weapon. Brandeis sophomore Alex Dalrymple (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) went 2-1 for the Judges, winning the bout that clinched the match, 3-2 in overtime. Wellesley sophomore Hannah Braaten (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was the only undefeated fencer for the Blue on the night, going 3-0, including a 5-3 win over Dalrymple in the final bout of the night. Sophomore Wendy Chin (New York, N.Y./NYC Lab School) posted a winning record for the visitors, going 2-1.

The Judges are next in action at the Brandeis-MIT Invitational on Saturday, while Wellesley hosts their Invitational tournament at the same time.
