The Brandeis fencing team had a successful day on Saturday at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational.

On the women's side, two competitors medaled, one from both foil and epee. Juniors Alex Dalrymple (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) and Emma Larkin (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly) won bronze in foil and epee competitions, while fellow junior Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian) and sophomore Emily Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) took fifth place in sabre and epee respectively. Dalrymple went 4-1 in pools, emerging 15^th for the direct elimination round. She proceeded to win another four bouts, falling in the semi-finals the third-seeded fencer from Brown. Larkin swept the pools 5-0, coming in second for the direct elimination round. She won four bouts, losing to the third seed from University of Florida in the semi-finals. Hanley went 6-0 in pool play to earn sixth seed for the elimination tournament. She fenced well, missing her chance to advance to the semi-finals by only one point. Mandel emerged fifth from pools, fighting to win three of her bouts in the direct elimination round before falling to fourth seeded Vassar, 15-12.

The men's team produced one medal and five competitors in the final eight, four in epee and one in sabre. The men's epee squad dominated the top eight places, with seniors Will Bedor (Rego Park, N.Y./Francis Lewis), and Andrew Travis (Taunton, Mass./Bristol-Plymouth), and junior Carl Goldfarb (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) taking silver, fifth, and sixth places. Alex Powell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) took eighth place. Bedor swept pools, going 6-0, to emerge tenth for direct eliminations. He proceeded to defeat six fencers, including senior Alex Clos (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) 15-11 and Goldfarb via walkover, to advance to the gold medal bout, in which he fell to the top seeded fencer from Sacred Heart University. In the initial pools, Travis went 5-1, emerging 13^th for the elimination tournament. He then won four bouts, defeating Brandeis senior Jared Shackelford (Arlington, Texas) 15-12, before losing in the quarter-finals to 12^th seeded Brown. Goldfarb did well in pools, winning five of his bouts to bring him to 15^th place after pools. He advanced swiftly until the quarter finals, when he lost to Bedor. Powell had a successful day, too, going 4-2 to bring him to 35^th seed for direct eliminations.  He proceeded to win another four bouts, including winning against Brandeis junior David Litvak (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Center) 15-11, to propel himself to the quarter-finals, which he lost to a 22^nd seeded Boston College fencer. Junior Jon Rollock (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) took fifth place in the men's sabre competition, emerging 6-0 from pools to become fourth seed before direct eliminations. He proceeded to win three more bouts before falling to Vassar's fifth seeded fencer.
