WALTHAM, Mass. -- In their first match of the 2010 Eric Sollee Invitational, the Brandeis women's fencing team knocked off eight-ranked Penn, 14-13. The Judges dropped 5-4 decisions in the saber and epee, with rookie saber Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and sophomore epee Emily Mandel (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) both going 2-1 to keep the weapon's close. In foil action, rookie Vikki Nunley (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) went 3-0, while sophomore Emily Levy (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) went 2-1. Nunley took a 5-1 decision to snap a 12-12 tie, while Levy clinched the match with a 5-2 decision.

The Brandeis men dropped their opener to #6 Penn, 17-10. Junior Jon Rollock (Gilford, N.H./Gilford)  led the Judges with a 3-0 record in saber, while senior Will Bedor (Rego Park, N.Y./Francis Lewis) went 3-0 in epee to lead the Judges to a 5-4 weapon victory.

In round two on the day, the Brandeis women claimed the UAA crown with a 15-12 victory over rival NYU. The epee and saber squads carried the day against the Violets, with epee taking a 6-3 win and saber taking a 5-4 victory. The entire epee squad contributed to the win, with Mandel, junior Emma Larkin (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Acad.) and senior Sydney Reuben (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) all going 2-1. Messinger and junior Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian) went 2-1 in saber action. Senior Julia Mouk (Rocky Point, N.Y./Chapin School) went 3-0 in foil, allowing just four touches in her three bouts, while Nunley picked up the decisive 14th win at the end of the second round of fencing.

On the men's side, Brandeis dropped an 18-9 decision to NYU despite another 5-4 win for the epee squad. Bedor went 2-0, while senior Jared Shackleford (Arlington, Texas/homeschooled) posted a 2-1 mark. Junior Adam Austin, a 2009 NCAA participant, went 2-1 in the saber (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack), accounting for half of the squad's non-epee points.

In the second session of the day, the Brandeis women continued their fine performances, finished with wins over Haverford (19-8), Air Force (19-8) and Hunter (18-9), winning eight of nine weapons head-to-head. Messinger went 5-0 in the final three matches, while Hanley was 4-0 for the saber squad. Mouk posted a 7-0 mark in the foil after the lunch break, while Larkin topped the epee squad at 7-1.

The Brandeis men lost narrow 16-11 decisions to Haverford and Air Force before finally breaking through with a 22-5 over Hunter to close out the day. The saber squad won all three of their afternoon matches, while the epeeists lost two 5-4 decisions before winning by the same score against Hunter. Austin had the team's best record in the afternoon in the saber, going 7-0. Sophomore Sean Norton (Leonia, N.J./Dwight-Englewood) topped the foil squad with four wins and a deep rotation in the epee saw junior Carl Goldfarb (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) put together a 3-0 record to lead the team in the afternoon session.
