Hanley goes 13-2, but Judges are winless at 2009 Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- In the first of two home events in 2009-10, the Brandeis women's fencing team was unable to continue its sucess from the first Northeast Conference meet, going 0-5, including a narrow 14-13 loss to North Carolina.

The saber squad had the most success on 0-5 afternoon, posting wins over Brown (12-15 overall), St. John's (11-16) and Cornell (10-17). Junior NCAA qualifier Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian) led the way against Brown, going 3-0, while junior Alex Turner (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central) was 2-1 in a 6-3 Brandeis win. In a 6-3 win over SJU, Hanley went 2-1, while four other fencers contributed wins as well. Hanley also posted a perfect record against Cornell in a 5-4 weapon victory. Overall on the afternoon, Hanley had the Judges' best record between the Brandeis men and women, going 13-2.

The Judges' only other squad win came in their closest match of the day, a 14-13 loss at the hands of North Carolina, where each weapon was decided by one point. The Tar Heels took 5-4 decisions in saber and foil, but two wins apiece from senior Sydney Reuben (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) and sophomore Emily Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) were enough for a 5-4 win there.
