Women's fencing places third overall at New England's

HADLEY, Mass. -- The Brandeis Women's Fencing Team won the Bronze Medal at the New England Championships at Mount Holyoke College last Sunday. Competing against fifteen other schools, each squad finished among the top four, with epee in second, saber in third, and foil in fourth. The epee squad had a strong day, sweeping Boston University, Sacred Heart, Smith, and Wellesley, while winning 2-1 over the top- rated epee squad, Vassar College, and defeating the overall best team, Boston College, 2-1. Senior Sydney Reuben (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) went 6-3, junior Emma Larkin (Upper Montclair, N.J./ Montclair Kimberly Acad.) went 12-1, coming in fourth at the individual tournament, and sophomore Jesse Begelfer (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) - in her first year as a fencer - was undefeated for the day, going 5-0. 

The saber squad also had a good day, sweeping Sacred Heart, Boston University, Tufts, URI, Mt. Holyoke, and Wellesley, and defeating second-seeded MIT 2-1. Junior Kayla Cronin (Plainfield, Mass./Bishop Freehan) went 12-1, qualifying for the individual tournament. Junior Alex Turner (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central) was undefeated, going 7-0, while rookie Emmily Smith went 6-2. The foil squad, despite the injury of junior Emily Levy (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), had wins over second-seeded MIT and Sacred Heart University 2-1 and also swept Boston University, Dartmouth, Tufts, UMass, URI, and Smith. Senior Julia Mouk (Rocky Point, N.Y./Chapin School) went 9-1, and rookie Vikki Nunley (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) went 11-3, competing in the individual tournament in which she placed sixth.
