Women's fencing downs Wellesley, 18-9, to improve to 13-5

WELLESLEY, Mass. (courtesy Wellesley College sports information) -- The Brandeis women's fencing team took a pair of weapon victories in the saber and foil tonight to lead the Judges to an 18-9 win over local rival Wellesley College in Wellesley. Brandeis improved to 13-5 with the win over their Northeast Fencing Conference foe, while the Blue fell to 5-6.

In sabre, Brandeis won the first eight bouts in an 8-1 win. Juniors Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian) and Alex Turner (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central) each went 2-0, while rookie Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) posted a 3-0 record for the Judges, tying for team-high on the night.  Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, Calif.) picked up the lone victory for Wellesley.

The teams split the first two bouts in foil, but then Brandeis took over to record a 7-2 victory.  Rookie Vikki Nunley (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) and senior Julia Mouk (Rocky Point, N.Y./Chapin School) were both undefeated for the Judges, with Nunley going a team-best 3-0 on the night, and Mouk, 2-0.  Wellesley picked up wins from Hannah Braaten (Concord, Mass.) and Wendy Chin (New York, N.Y.).

Wellesley took the epee competition, 6-3, as Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, R.I.) went 3-0, while Annemarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, Mass.) went 2-1.  Brandeis got one win each from junior Emma Larkin (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Acad.), senior Sydney Reuben (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes) and junior Adrienne Katz (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) to wrap up the match.

Wellesley fencing returns to action on January 30th, hosting UMass and Smith at the Wellesley Invitational beginning at 9:00am.  Brandeis co-hosts the Eric Sollee Invitational, also on Saturday at 9:00am.
