Saber squad leads women's fencing to victory over Wellesley

Waltham, Mass – With the saber squad leading the way, going 9-0, the Brandeis University women's fencing team topped Wellesely college, 14-13, in tonight's fencing meet.

Senior Anna Hanley (Medford, Mass./Lexington Christian) led the saber squad to an undefeated win over the Blue. She and her teammates sophomores Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Emmily Smith (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward-Melville) were all 3-0 in their bouts.

Brandeis struggled in foil and epee, suffering losses in both weapons. Wellesley seniors Hannah Braaten (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) and Wendy Chin (New York, N.Y./NYC Lab School) both went 3-0 in foil, to lead their team to a 6-3 victory.  For Brandeis, senior Alex Turner (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central) had a good bout in the third round, beating rookie Jenny Mittleman (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline High School), 5-1.

In epee Wellesley was paced by senior Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland), who was 3-0, to win the weapon 7-2.  Rookie Leah Mack (Tarrytown, N.Y./Irvington) went 2-1, to capture the only Brandeis wins.

Wellesley competes again on February 17 at the New England Championships hosted by UMass Boston.

The Judges fence again on Saturday, February 12 at the Stevens Tech invitational.
