WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Zoe Messinger of Short Hills, N.J. was selected by the University Athletic Association for Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending February 13, 2011 as a member of the women's fencing squad.
Messinger, a sophomore sabre fencer, finished 12-3 to help the Judges to a 5-1 week. She registered a pair of 3-0 marks in 14-13 wins over Wellesley College on Feb. 8 and Johns Hopkins University at a seven-team meet hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, Feb. 13. Brandeis also picked up wins over Stevens (17-10), Fairleigh Dickinson University (20-7), and New Jersey Institute of Technology (20-7), and lost to Temple University (6-21) at Stevens.
Overall this season, Messinger owns a 41-23 record, second best on the Judges' saber squad. Under head coach Bill Shipman, Brandeis is 22-10 and finished second in the Northeast Fencing Conference. The Judges are next in action on February 27 at the New England championships at Mount Holyoke College.
Messinger is a 2009 graduate of Millburn High School.
