WELLESLEY, Mass. (taken from a Wellesley College press release) – The Brandeis University women's fencing team edged host Wellesley College, 14-13, in a dual meet on Wednesday evening at Wellesley. Brandeis won epee 8-1, and took sabre, 6-3, to offset a 9-0 sweep by the Blue in foil action. The Judges improve to 5-7 on the season, while Wellesley falls to 6-7. This marks the second-straight year that the Judges earned a one-point win over their local rivals in their annual midweek match.

In sabre action, Brandeis picked up three wins each from juniors Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Emmily Smith (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward-Melville) to take the competition, 6-3. Messinger ended up recording the match-clinching point. Wellesley got solo victories from Dania Wright, Zsofia Schweger and Mariami Bekauri, to account for the three Blue points in the weapon.

In the epee competition, the visitors came away with an 8-1 win. Senior Emily Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) and sophomore Leah Mack (Tarrytown, N.Y./Irvington) each went 3-0 for the Judges, while sophomore Kristen Ha (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale CDS) picked up two wins. Wellesley's lone point came from Elise Dong.

In the foil competition, the Blue swept the Judges, as Wellesley's Carla The, Olivia Wei, and Oleander Furman each picked up three victories.

Brandeis is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Boston College for Northeast Fencing Conference action. Wellesley will also fence on Saturday, hosting the 2012 Wellesley Invitational, beginning at 9:00am.
