Women split at second Northeast Fencing Meet

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Brandeis women's fencing team went .500 at their second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. The Judges defeated Dartmouth (17-10), Tufts (15-12) and Smith (15-12), but fell to meet host Boston College (21-6), Brown (24-3) and Vassar (19-8). The Judges move to 8-10 overall, 7-5 in the NFC.

The epee squad was the most successful weapon on the day for the Judges, boasting a 4-2 record. In addition to emphatic wins over Dartmouth (9-0) and Smith (8-1), they also posted a 5-4 victory over BC. The top performers were sophomore Leah Mack (Tarrytown, N.Y./Tarrytown), who went 12-6 to post the most wins of any Brandeis fencer, men or women, on the day, and rookie Eliza Powell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair), who went 6-3.

In their three-point win over Tufts, Brandeis got a 7-2 weapon victory from the foil squad, their only win of the day, as rookie Abby Hirsch (New York, N.Y./Spence) earned the clinching point in the match.

The Judges return to action next Saturday at home when they host the Eric Sollee Invitational, facing competition from NYU, Penn, Hunter, Johns Hopkins and Haverford.
