WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's fencing team went 1-4 at this afternoon's Eric Sollee Invitational. The Judges' lone win was a 19-8 victory over Hunter College. They suffered losses to Haverford (11-16), #7-ranked Pennsylvania (5-22), Johns Hopkins (8-19) and UAA rival NYU (7-20). With the defeats, the Judges' record falls to 9-14 this season.

The Judges cruised to victory over Hunter, winning all three weapons. Epee took the most decisive victory, with sophomores Kristen Ha (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale CDS) and Leah Mack (Tarrytown, N.Y./Tarrytown) each going 3-0 in an 8-1 victory. Juniors Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Emmily Smith (Stonybrook, N.Y./Ward-Melville) were each 2-0 in saber action, while sophomore foil Hallie Frank (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) won both the matches she competed in as well.

Brandeis had two other weapon wins on the afternoon. In their five-point loss to Haverford, the first for Fords' head coach Chris Spencer '94 against his alma mater on the women's side, the saber squad went 5-4, with Messinger posting a 3-0 record and Smith going 2-1. Mack also picked up a couple of wins in epee action. Against NYU, the epee squad picked a 5-4 victory, with Mack and Ha again going 2-1 and senior Emily Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./Masters School) picking up an additional point in her only bout of the match.

No Brandeis fencer earned multiple points in the losses to No. 9 Penn, while Messinger, Mack and junior foil Vikki Nunley (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees), who has been limited due to illness this semester, each had two wins in the loss to Johns Hopkins.

The Judges are back in action next weekend when they travel to North Carolina for the Duke Invitational.
