SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Brandeis rookie foil fencer Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Acad.) earned two wins in 15 matches on the third day of action at the 2013 NCAA Fencing championships - the first day of women's competition - hosted by the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

Mattos, who suffered only 13 defeats during the regular dual-match season, matched that total in a meet with the 24 best collegiate fencers from Division I, II and III. Her two wins came against Mai Shaito of the Ohio State University (5-3) and Fatima Largaespada of Temple University (5-4). Mattos also suffered 5-4 defeat at the hands of Lily McIlwee of Stanford. Mattos is currently in 23rd place, one spot ahead of McIlwee based on number of touches.

Mattos will face fencers from Princeton, Penn State, Notre Dame, Harvard and Pennsylvania on Day 4 of the championships. Brandeis, which picked up 16 wins from the men's squad, is in 20th place overall - out of 25 teams represented - headed into the final day of action. The Judges are third among four Division III schools, trailing NYU (22 points) and MIT (19 points).
