DURHAM, N.C. - The Brandeis women's fencing team battled a tough schedule at the Duke Invitational on Saturday, fighting to a 2-3 record against Temple, Air Force, MIT, UNC and host Duke. The Judges were led by sophomore Caroline Mattos (Cumberland, R.I./LaSalle Acad.) who finished 13-2, part of an impressive foil squad that went 25-20 overall.

Brandeis started the day with a 23-4 loss to Temple, the No. 8 team in the country. The foil squad won three bouts, including two wins by Mattos.

The Judges quickly bounced back, picking up a 15-12 victory over the Air Force. Sophomores Sonya Glickman (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) and Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) won three and two bouts, respectively, pacing epee to a 6-3 win. Saber won, 5-4 behind two wins apiece for rookies Ashley Jean (Norwood, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Loomis-Chaffee). Mattos and senior Vikki Nunley (Lebanon, N.J./Voorhees) each won twice in foil.

The foil squad starred during a 14-13 victory against MIT, posting an 8-1 record. Mattos and Nunley both went 3-0, while sophomore Annette Kim (Morganville, N.J./Freehold) went 2-1.

Brandeis lost its final two matches of the day, falling 17-10 to UNC and 18-9 to Duke. Mattos again won all three of her bouts in both matches, while Nunley picked up two wins against UNC. Against the Blue Devils, Jean went 2-0, while Glickman had both of the Judges' wins in epee.

Brandeis is back in action on Wednesday for the Beanpot. The Judges will take on Boston College, Harvard and MIT.
