Mowell named UAA Fencer of the Week
WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis student-athletes have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for Dec. 8. Senior Adam Mandel of White Plains, N.Y., and junior Gwendolyn Mowell of Wycoff, N.J., were honored for men's and women's fencing, while junior Grady Ward of Essex Junction, Vt., was chosen for men's indoor track and field.

      Mowell, and epee fencer, was honored by the UAA for the first time. Also competing at home in the Brandeis Invitational, she went 10-2 as the Judges posted a 3-2 overall record. The Brandeis women also defeated Yale, 14-13, marking the third year in a row that the Judges earned a one-point win over the Elis. Mowell had the squad-clinching point in epee, as Brandeis and Yale were tied, 3-3, heading into the final set of three bouts. Brandeis also defeated Johns Hopkins, 19-8, and Air Force, 17-10, while falling to St. Johns and Cornell, both by a score of 9-18. Mowell posted a pair of wins in the two Brandeis losses, while going 2-1 against Yale and Air Force.

      Mandel, a sabre fencer, was selected by the UAA for the second time this season and the 15th time in his career. At the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 7, he posted an 11-1 record as Brandeis went 2-2. The highlight of the meet for the Judges was a 17-10 victory over Ivy League foe Yale University in which the sabre squad went 7-2. The win for Brandeis was their first over the Bulldogs since 2007. Brandeis also defeated Johns Hopkins, 15-12, with sabre picking up a 7-2 decision. The Judges fell to the U.S. Air Force Academy, 11-16, and St. John's University, 9-18. Overall this season, the Judges are 6-3.

      Ward was honored for the first time in his career at the track and field team's first meet of the season. Competing at the UMass Boston Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Ward finished third overall in the mile run with a lifetime best time of 4:23.29, trailing two runners from Division II Stonehill. His time was ranked the second-fastest in Division III over the weekend.

      Mandel is a 2011 graduate of the Masters School.

Mowell is a 2012 graduate of Indian Hills High School.

Ward is a 2012 graduate of Essex High School.
