Bryson, Carminucci claim UAA Athlete of the Week honors for Feb. 12

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomores Emily Bryson of Quincy, Mass., and Joanne Carminucci of Brewster, N.Y., have been named University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for women's indoor track and field and women's fencing, respectively, for the week ending February 12.

Bryson was honored for the sixth time this year by the UAA. Running at Boston University on Friday afternoon at the David Hemery Valentine's Invitational, Bryson established a new personal best in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:43.15. In a field comprised of Division I, II and III runners, she was 22nd overall out of 88 at the meet, second among Division III runners. Bryson's time was the fastest time in the UAA so far this season and fourth among all D3 student-athletes. She also leads the UAA and is ranked third nationally in the mile run. Bryson is a two-time All-American in cross country who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the mile last year.

Brandeis will compete in the New England Division III Championships next weekend at MIT, and the Judges will host the UAA Championships in the Gosman Athletic Center on Feb. 25 and 26.

Carminucci, a foil fencer, was named UAA Women's Fencing Athlete of the Week for the second time this year. She went undefeated at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational in Teaneck, N.J., on Saturday afternoon, posting a 12-0 record. The foil squad was 6-0 while the Judges were 4-2 overall. She was 3-0 against host FDU, Johns Hopkins and #7-ranked Temple. She also went 2-0 against Hunter and 1-0 against Drew. Carminucci helped the foil squad go unbeaten on the day, including a 6-3 win over Temple. Overall, Brandeis defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (15-12), Wagner (24-3), Hunter (21-6) and Drew (16-11), while falling to Temple (11-16) and Johns Hopkins (10-17).

Brandeis fencing is back in action on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Boston College when they meet the host Eagles, Harvard and MIT in the Fencing Beanpot Tournament.

Bryson is a 2015 graduate of North Quincy High School.

Carminucci is a 2015 graduate of North Salem High School.
