First-year fencers Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Jessica Morales of Wilmington, Mass., both competed in Kansas City Missouri on Oct. 21 at the first of four Olympic Trial events this season.  They competed in the Division 1 WS.  The Division 1 events are considered Olympic Trials in an Olympic Qualification season because the points earned, combined with points earned at international events, will determine 2020 Olympic team.

Shealy went 2-4 in pool play, including a defeat of All American sabrist Kara Linder from Notre Dame.  This earned her a place in the Direct elimination tableau where she lost a close 15-10 bout against Ryan Jenkins, who is currently a first-year at Princeton in the table of 128.

Jessica, who represents Colombia internationally, stormed through pools with a 5-1 record.  Her only defeat was a 3-5 loss to Monica Aksamit, a 2016 Olympic team Bronze Medalist.  This earned her a bye to the top 64 fencers where she defeated Lola Possick from New Jersey 15-7.  She then lost her encounter to make the top 16, 15-10 against Honor Johnson from Virginia.

In a field of 125 fencers, Maggie ended the day in 93rd and Jessica finished 20th.
