WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University first-year Jessica Morales of Wilmington, Massachusetts, has been named the University Athletic Association Women's Fencer of the Week for the week March 1.
Morales was honored for the fifth time this season for her performance at the Junior Pan Am Games in San Salvador, El Salvador. Competing in sabre for Colombia, Morales earned a bronze medal at the international competition. She went 5-1 in pool play to earn the eighth seed in direct elimination. After defeating the 25th seed from Guatemala, 15-6, and the ninth seed from the U.S., 15-11, Morales met top-seeded and the #4-ranked junior in the world, Chloe Fox-Gitomer of the U.S., who fences collegiately for Princeton. Morales pulled a convincing upset, 15-5, to reach the semifinals, where she fell to the fourth seed from Mexico, 15-8. Morales also helped the Colombian team to a fourth-place finish at the event. She held a 15-12 advantage in the team's 45-42 win over Canada in the first round, but did not fence in the semifinals against the U.S.
Morales and the Brandeis fencing team return to action this weekend at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Cornell University on Sunday.
Morales is a 2019 graduate of Wilmington High School.
