Shealy goes 11-1 in sabre for women's fencing at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The Brandeis University women's fencing team faced four top-15 opponents in their four matches today as the Judges competed at the 2023 Duke Invitational. The Judges lost all four matches, with one squad win and one impressive individual performance.

BRANDEIS RESULTS

  • #1 Notre Dame 18, Brandeis 9 (S, 4-5; F, 0-9; E, 5-4)
  • #5 Northwestern 22, Brandeis 5 (S, 4-5; F, 0-9; E, 1-8)
  • #9 Penn State 18, Brandeis 9 (S, 4-5; F, 3-6; E, 2-7)
  • #12 Duke 24, Brandeis 3 (S, 3-6; F, 0-9; E, 0-9)

TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Judges' lone squad win came from the epee squad, who knocked off Notre Dame, 5-4. Senior Monica Aponte (San Juan, P.R. / St. John's School) and sophomore Bronwyn Rothman-Hall (San Francisco, Calif. / Ruth Asawa School of the Arts) each went 2-1 in the upset.
  • The sabre squad went 0-4 on the day, but three of the four losses were by 5-4 scores. Senior Maggie Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) was particularly impressive, going 11-1 on the day, with her only loss coming to Notre Dame. She accounted for 42 percent of the team's points on the day.
  • Sophomore Alex McKee (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) shined for Brandeis against Penn State, posting a 2-1 record.
