BABSON PARK, Mass. (taken from a Babson College press release)
-- Host Babson College scored the game's only goal in the 29th
minute as the Beavers edged visiting Brandeis University, 1-0, on
Tuesday afternoon.
After Brandeis (1-1-0) registered four of the game's first five
shots, Babson (2-0-0) slowly took control over the final 30 minutes
of the opening half. The Beavers, who outshot the Judges 7-1 during
that stretch, eventually took the lead when junior Caitlin Cronin
(Hanover, Mass.)took the ball away from a defender at the top left
corner of the box and ripped a perfect shot that curled away from
goalie Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and settled into the
upper right corner of the net. It was the junior midfielder's
second goal of the season -- both of which have been
game-winners.
That would prove to be enough for Babson senior goalie Marci
McCormack (Wolcott, Conn.) and the stingy Babson defense. The
senior goalkeeper made four of her seven saves in the second half
to earn her second shutout of the season. Sophomore back Shir
Castel (Boston, Mass.) also came up big for the Beavers when she
made a potential goal-saving slide tackle on a breakaway by
Brandeis sophomore Amy King (Merrimack, N.H.) with 8:25 remaining
in the game.
Medow also enjoyed a strong showing in net for the Judges,
finishing with six saves.
