GORHAM, Maine -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England championship tournament today. The Judges, seeded seventh, battled the No. 2 seed University of Southern Maine to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 more of sudden-victory overtime. With the light fading, Brandeis defeated the Huskies, 5-4, on penalty kicks. Rookie forward Meredith Millstein (Waterford, Mich.) converted the winning goal on the seventh shot and sophomore keeper Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) saved two of the seven PKs she faced, with another sailing over the net.

Brandeis also got successful attempts from sophomore Sarah Jasak (Middletown, N.J.), sophomore Kim Fraser (Newburyport, Mass.) and junior Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) in the round of five shooters. Southern Maine received successful shots from senior Devin Edwards (South Paris, Maine), sophomore Samantha Rennie (Hudson, N.H.) and senior Katie Else (Conway, N.H.). Else's shot forced the tiebreaker into sudden death overtime.

Sophomore Lizzie Bremner (San Rafael, Cal.) for Brandeis and senior Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H.) for USM were successful in the first sudden death round. After freshman Milstein put the Judges ahead 5-4, Medow stopped the attempt of freshman Kara Higgins (Saint John, N.B.) to end the match.

Medow was credited with two saves in the match while USM freshman keeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine) had seven stops. Brandeis had a 20-7 advantage in shots while USM held a 7-5 margin in corner kicks.

Brandeis will face Clark University in the semifinals, Saturday at 2:30 pm. The Cougars defeated Wentworth, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. Earlier this season, Brandeis downed Clark, 3-0, in Waltham behind two goals from senior Lauren Gregor. Tickets to the games will be $3 for adults and $1 for students.
