WALTHAM, Mass. – The visiting Washington University
women's soccer team scored three goals in less than eight minutes
in the first half and finished with a 4-0 University Athletic
Association (UAA) victory over the host Brandeis University Judges.
Tonight's contest was the first night women's soccer match played
at Brandeis's Gordon Field.
Washington University (10-6-1, 2-3-0 UAA) opened the scoring in the
24th minute on a goal by rookie Caitlin Malone (Valparaiso, Ill.).
After the ball bounced around in the box, Malone collected it and
shot it off the far post and past Brandeis (7-7-1, 1-4-0 UAA)
keeper Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). It was Malone's
second goal of the season.
The Bears struck again less than three minutes later when sophomore
midfielder Kim O'Keefe (Florissant, Mo.) took advantage of
confusion in the box to blast a ball just under the crossbar from
about 12 yards out. In the 32nd minute, WashU scored their third
goal on a beautiful corner kick from the foot of junior midfielder
Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) to the head of
sophomore reserve forward Katie Campos (Buffalo, N.Y.), who tallied
her first goal of the season.
The only goal of the second half came from Fowler-Finn, who scored
her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 72nd minute.
Junior Maila Labadie (Orinda, Calif.) picked up the assist.
In net, Medow made two saves in the first half, while sophomore
Julie Scherr (Baltimore, Md.) had four stops in the second half for
the Judges. WashU starter Nina Sass (Burr Ridge, Ill.) had one save
in the first stanza, while sophomore back-up Carrie Sear
(Evanstown, Ill.) had six saves in the second.
Brandeis next faces the University of Chicago on Sunday at 1:30
p.m., while Washington University heads to NYU, also a 1:30 Sunday
