WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University and Case Western
Reserve University women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw after
110 minutes of action today on Gordon Field in the University
Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams.
After an even first half in which the shots were even at five
aside, Brandeis (6-2-1, 0-0-1 UAA) dominated the game
statistically, outshooting the Spartans, 23-4, the rest of the
way.
But Case (3-6-1, 0-0-1 UAA) got on the board first in the 72nd
minute. After Brandeis committed a turnover in the defensive end,
rookie midfielder Katie Fromwiller (Clackamas, Ore.) fed senior
forward Amber Taylor (Germantown, Md.), who converted for her
second goal of the season.
The Judges responded in the 79th minute. Senior forward Lisa Kaplin
(Armonk, N.Y.) split a pair of Case defenders to free herself for a
one-on-one with the goalie, and she calmly deposited her seventh
goal of the season and the 33rd of her career. Kaplin moved into a
tie for fifth on the Judges' career scoring list with 74 points on
33 goals and eight assists.
Brandeis had the best shot to win the game in regulation, but
sophomore Jenna Lipawsky (Parkland, Fla.) hit the crossbar on a
free kick from about 25 yards out. The Judges outshot the Spartans
in the overtime sessions, 6-1, with three shots going on net, but
couldn't cross the goal-line.
Case sophomore netminder Kirsten McClain (Rochester, N.Y.) had a
fine performance in goal, making 13 saves to preserve the tie.
Brandeis sophomore goalkeeper Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)
had two stops for the Judges.
Brandeis is next in action on Wednesday hosting Tufts University at
4:00 p.m., while Case takes on Allegheny College Tuesday at 7:00
p.m.
