Women's soccer collects first UAA win, 2-1, over CMU

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team won for the first time after a pair of ties in University Athletic Association (UAA) play this season tonight, defeating visiting Carnegie Mellon, 2-1, on Gordon Field.

Brandeis (7-3-2, 1-0-2 UAA) scored first on a rifle off the foot of rookie midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.). Gorenkoff made a nice play to let a free ball go through her legs, turned, and fired a shot from about 20 yards out that deflected off the far post and in. It was her second goal of the year.

Carnegie Mellon (4-6-1, 0-3-0 UAA) got an equalizer in the 51st minute. Brandeis junior goalie Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made a nice save on CMU sophomore Abigail Coffin Pittsburgh, Pa.), but Tartan junior forward Kasey Stever (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was right there to convert for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Judges answered in the 63rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Jenna Lipawsky (Parkland, Fla.) made a nice header over the defense to a streaking Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.). The senior stayed just onside and went on goal, firing the game-winner to the upper left corner. The goal was Kaplin's team-leading eighth of the season and her third game-winner.

Medow had seven saves for the Judges, while sophomore Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md.) had five stops for CMU.

Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon continue their UAA weekends on Sunday, when the Judges host Emory while the Tartans head to NYU.
