WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior midfielder
Lizzie Bremner (San Rafael, Calif.) converted a penalty kick in the
57th minute for the evening's only goal as the Judges defeated the
visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots, 1-0, on Gordon Field.
Brandeis (4-2) won its fourth straight game and snapped Gordon's
(5-2) four-game streak in the process.
Most of the game was played in the midfield, with only two shots
for each team finding their way on goal. The decisive moment came
11:07 into the second half, when a Gordon defender pulled down
Brandeis forward Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) just as she entered the
18-yard box. Bremner calmly directed the ensuing PK into the right
side of the net after Gordon rookie goalkeeper Abby Ytzen (Des
Moines, Iowa) dove to her left. The Scots had the only other
scoring chance after that, but sophomore midfielder Mary Snell
(Carlisle, Mass.) was denied in the 70th minute.
Brandeis goalkeeper Amber Debole (Swampscott, Mass.) made two saves
for her second collegiate win and first shutout. Junior Mary
Griffenhagen (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had one save in the first half
for Gordon. Ytzen did not have a stop in relief and took the loss.
The Judges owned an 8-4 shot advantage, while the Scots had three
corner kicks to Brandeis's two.
Brandeis next takes on Bowdoin College on Sunday at noon, while
Gordon hosts Nichols College in a CCC showdown Saturday at noon.
