WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University and University of
Chicago women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 draw this evening in
a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Gordon
Field.
Both teams found the back of the net early, but a high-scoring
affair was not to follow. Chicago (6-3-3, 0-1-2 UAA) opened the
scoring on a corner kick in the ninth minute. Senior back Amanda
Catalano (Whitinsville, Mass.) took the kick and put it right on
the head of sophomore midfielder Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills,
Calif.), who knocked it home for her second goal of the season.
Brandeis (7-3-2, 1-1-1 UAA) answered just 3:03 later. After a cross
by sophomore Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) was intercepted by
a Maroon defender, the visitors turned right over to senior Sarah
Jasak (Middletown, N.J.) knotted the game at 1-1. It was her fourth
goal of the season, second-most on the team.
Both teams had chances throughout the rest of the game, but
Chicago's 12-1 advantage in corner kicks led to some of the
tightest exchanges. Three minutes into the first overtime, Brandeis
sophomore Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a fine save
when she punched a Catalano corner that looked like it was bending
into the net over the crossbar instead. The Maroons were also
unable to take advantage of a scrum just before the final horn in
the second overtime blew.
Rosenzweig made seven saves for the Judges, while senior Amanda
Sutter (Irvine, Calif.) had five stops for Chicago.
Brandeis is next in action against No. 8 in the nation Washington
University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in another UAA contest, while
Chicago heads to New York University for a league contest at the
same time. WashU defeated NYU, 2-1, today.
