WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer
team scored a pair of second-half goals tonight as the Judges
defeated visiting Smith College, 3-1, on Gordon Field.
Brandeis (6-1-1) opened the scoring in the 16th minute as senior
Sarah Jasak (Middletown, N.J.) slotted a through ball that freed
classmate Tzlil Castel (Boston, Mass.). Castel went one-on-one with
Pioneer junior keeper Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland. Calif.) and
tallied her second goal of the season.
Smith (1-5-1) answered in the 29th minute. Sophomore back Julianna
Rose (Seattle, Wash.) played a ball over the Brandeis defense.
Brandeis sophomore netminder Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.)
came out to try to intercept the ball, but Smith sophomore forward
Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga.) beat her to it and chipped it in for
her second goal of the campaign. The Judges owned a 19-7 shot
advantage in the first half, but Dieckmann's 10 first-half saves
kept the score knotted at 1-1 at the intermission.
Brandeis scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. Jasak
again had the assist, as she found junior reserve midfielder
Lindsay Deslauriers (Port of Spain, Trinidad) alone just outside
the box. Deslauriers angled her shot to the far side of the net
from about 20 yards out, and tallied her first collegiate goal.
The Judges added an insurance goal 10 minutes later on an own goal.
Sophomore forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) served the
ball into the box, where a Smith defender headed the ball into the
Pioneer net.
For the game, Brandeis outshot Smith, 26-7, including 15-4 in shots
on goal. Rosenzweig finished with three saves for her sixth win of
the season, while Dieckmann was stout in net for the visitors,
making 12 saves.
Brandeis opens up University Athletic Association (UAA) play on
Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when they take on the University of
Rochester. Smith hosts Babson in a NEWMAC contest the same day at
noon.
