WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University forward Melissa Gorenkoff of Woodbury, N.Y., has been selected to University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Association soccer second team. In addition, sophomores Taryn Martiniello of Wilmington, Mass., and Tiffany Pacheco of Rehoboth, Mass., and rookie Francesca Shin of Bayside, N.Y., were named honorable mention All-UAA.
Gorenkoff, a junior captain, earned All-Association second-team honors for the second year in a row. Gorenkoff was second on the squad in scoring during the regular season with four goals and seven assists for 15 points. She finished in a tie for eighth in the league in conference games with eight points on two goals and two assists, tying for fourth in UAA assists. Gorenkoff finished the season strong in the postseason, earned Most Valuable Player honors in guiding the Judges to an Eastern Conference Athletic Association (ECAC) Division III New England title, their second in a row. She scored four of the team's 10 goals in the tournament and assisted two others. Gorenkoff was involved in Brandeis's first two goals in all three tournament wins. For her career, Gorenkoff has 20 goals and 18 assists for 58 points, 10th on Brandeis's career scoring list and tied for third in career assists.
Martiniello, a back, anchored a Brandeis defense that shut out their opponents 11 times in 22 contests. She also scored a game-winning goal, bending in a corner kick to defeat Case Western Reserve University, 4-0, on Oct. 11. Martiniello was one of five players to play in all 22 games this season and one of only two to start every contest. She has started all 43 games for Brandeis in her career.
Pacheco, a forward, was the Judges' leading scorer in the regular season with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. She had one goal in Association play, scoring one of Brandeis's four goals in the Oct. 11 win against Case.
Shin was one the Judges' top rookie players this season, splitting time between midfield and defense. She made a key defensive save in UAA play, helping preserve a scoreless draw with Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 2. Her first collegiate goal was a game-winner in the quarterfinals of the ECAC tournament, a 4-0 win over St. Joseph (Conn.) College.
Overall this season, Brandeis finished with a 13-7-2 record and their second-straight ECAC tournament championship under head coach Denise Dallamora, in her 29th season. The Judges defeated St. Joseph, 4-0, Emmanuel College, 3-0, and the University of New England, 3-1, en route to the title. The Judges went 3-3-1 in the UAA, finishing in fourth place, after being selected for sixth place in the preseason poll.
Gorenkoff is a 2006 graduate of Syosset High School. She is the daughter of Miles and Marci Gorenkoff, Woodbury, N.Y.
Martiniello is a 2007 graduate of Wilmington High School. She is the daughter of Anthony and Wendy Martiniello, Wilmington, Mass.
Pacheco is a 2007 graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. She is the daughter of Tim and Barbara Pacheco, Rehoboth, Mass.
Shin is a 2008 graduate of Benjamin Cardozo High School. She is the daughter of Steve and Josephine Shin, Bayside, N.Y.
