Gorenkoff notches goal, assist as women's soccer upends Bowdoin, 3-0

WALTHAM, Mass. - Behind a goal and an assist by junior forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.), the Brandeis University women's soccer team knocked off visiting Bowdoin College, 3-0, in a non-conference showdown on Gordon Field today. With the win, the Judges (No. 10 in New England) improve to 9-5-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears (No. 4 in New England) fall to 6-3-3.

Brandeis wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring just 67 seconds into the contest. Gorenkoff's initial shot from just inside the goalie box was stopped by Bowdoin senior Kelly Thomas (W. Hartford, Conn.), but sophomore forward Kelly Cozzens (Lancaster, Mass.) was on the spot to bang home the rebound. It was Cozzens's first goal of the season and the third of her career. The game went to the half with the score 1-0 as the Judges owned a 9-8 edge in shots.

Gorenkoff doubled the lead in the 61st minute when her blast from 25 yards out went into the upper left corner, just out of the reach of a leaping Thomas. It was her third goal of the season. Rookie Kaitlin Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) added an insurance goal in the 67th minute when she headed in her own rebound.

Bowdoin ended up outshooting Brandeis, 16-14, but Judge junior Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) made seven saves for her seventh shutout of the campaign. Young finished with six saves and three goals allowed in the first 67 minutes, while sophomore Kat Flaherty (Fairfield, Conn.) was untested in the final 22 minutes.

Brandeis is next in action on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. when they host Roger Williams University in their final non-conference game. Bowdoin travels to CBB rival Colby in a NESCAC contest Saturday at 11 a.m.
