NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and made them stand up despite a late flurry by host NYU as the Judges defeated the Violets, 2-1, in a University Athletic Association contest played at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y., today. With the win, the Judges finish the regular season at 10-7-2, 3-3-1 in the UAA, clinching their fifth 10-win season in the past six years. Coupled with a 1-0 loss by Carnegie Mellon to Emory, Brandeis will finish the season fourth in the UAA with 10 points. NYU concludes the regular season at 10-8, 2-5 UAA.
Brandeis opened the scoring early after a flurry of shots in the fifth and sixth minutes. They finally broke through at the 5:53 mark. Rookie midfielder Mimi Theodore (Walpole, Mass.) had a shot cleared off the line by an NYU defender, but classmate Kaitlin Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) was there to put home the rebound with a header. It was Oldfield's third goal of the season.
The Judges scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 32nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Ellie Einhorn (Winter Park, Fla.) scored her third goal of the season on a long shot from about 25 yards away. It was her second game-winner of the season and the third of her career. The Judges carried the 2-0 advantage into the break, outshooting the hosts, 7-4, despite giving the Violets a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
NYU kept up the pressure in the second half, spoiling junior goalkeeper Hillary Rosenzweig's (Boca Raton, Fla.) bid at her eighth shutout of the season and the Judges' 10th overall in the 88th minute. Senior Sarah Pillemer struck for her eighth goal of the season with 2:06 left on the clock but the Brandeis defense held on for the win. Both Rosenzweig and NYU's Alex Walters finished the game with four saves on the afternoon. The Violets outshot Brandeis, 12-11, and finished with an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
