Second-half goal lifts Roger Williams past Brandeis women, 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The visiting Roger Williams University women's soccer game scored early in the second half to win their 12th-straight match tonight, defeating host Brandeis, 1-0, under the lights of Gordon Field. With the win, the Hawks improve to 15-2 on the season, while Brandeis falls to 9-6-1.

After an even first half in which both teams recorded four shots and three shots on goal, RWU broke the deadlock just over seven minutes into the second half. The Hawks' second-leading scorer, rookie Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.), got a step on a Brandeis defender at midfield and carried all the way to net. Pendleton got inside the 18-yard box and shot the ball inside the far post for her 11 goal of the season and third game-winner.

The Judges picked up the pace in the final 30 minutes, getting off 11 shots in that span. Four of those were on net, but junior Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped them all, finishing with seven saves. Her best stop came in the 61st minute, when she punched junior Melissa Gorenkoff's (Woodbury, N.Y.) bending shot from just outside the box over the crossbar. Rookie Kaitlin Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) hit the outside of the net in the 84th minute with a shot that had potential, but the Judges could not find an equalizer. Junior Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) made six saves in the losing effort for Brandeis.

Brandeis returns to University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. when they take on nationally-ranked Emory University.
