Women's soccer back to winning ways with 5-1 win at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Seven different members of the Brandeis University women's soccer team scored points today as the Judges jumped out to a 2-0 lead 5 minutes in and rolled to a 5-1 road victory over Smith College. With the win, Brandeis snaps a three-match winless streak.

Brandeis (5-2-1) dominated play in the first half when they scored two of their five goals. Rookie forward Mimi Theodore (Walpole, Mass.) drew Smith (1-6) keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, Ohio) to the left side of the goal and then put her shot in the back right corner for the first goal at the 13 minute mark.  Less than two minutes later, classmate Francesca Shin (Bayside, N.Y.) chipped the ball from the left side of the goal to sophomore midfielder Ellie Einhorn (Winter Park, Fla.) on the right side who found net.

In the second half, sophomore forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) converted a corner kick from classmate back Taryn Martiniello (Wilmington, Mass.) just minutes after the tip for the Judges third goal.  At the 56 minute mark, junior forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) found herself one-on-one with Bachtel.  Gorenkoff drew her off the line and then dribbled past her for the fourth goal. The Judges final goal was scored in the 72nd minute on a shot by rookie Kelly Doolittle (Bristol, Conn.) that sailed high into the back of the net.  Less than two minutes later, Smith's Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, Utah) took a shot from the right of the goal that bounced off the hands of Brandeis junior keeper Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) and into the goal for the Pioneers' lone goal.

Both teams are next in action against Wellesley College. The Pioneers travel to Wellesley for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest while Brandeis takes on the Blue on October 1 at 4 p.m. in a non-league match-up.
