Defense stifles UMass Boston as women's soccer wins, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Brandeis University women's soccer team registered their third-straight shutout of the season and seventh in a row dating back to 2007 as the Judges defeated visiting UMass Boston, 2-0, on Gordon Field today. Brandeis did not allow the Beacons a shot until the 89th minute of the game.

Brandeis (3-0) got all the scoring they would need in the 26th minute. Rookie midfielder Alanna Torre (Weston, Fla.) sent a nice long ball to junior forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.). Gorenkoff dribbled into the box and fired a shot. UMass Boston junior Courtney Haroules (Littleton, Mass.) stopped the initial attempt, but Brandeis sophomore Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn.) was there to put home the rebound for her second goal of the season. Unfortunately for the coach Denise Dallamora's squad going forward, Vallone lost her balance and suffered an injury on the play.

The Judges added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute on a corner kick. Sophomore Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) notched her team-leading third goal of the season when she headed home the corner taken by classmate Taryn Martiniello (Wilmington, Mass.).

The Brandeis defense held UMass Boston (1-3) without a shot until the 89th minute when rookie Taylor Sarsfield (Smithtown, N.Y.) put one wide. The Judges outshot the Beacons, 20-1, on the afternoon. Haroules made four saves in goal for the Beacons, while sophomore Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, N.H.) had one save in relief. Brandeis junior Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla.) was untested in net.

Brandeis is next in action on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. against Babson College, while UMass Boston takes on St. Joseph (Conn.) College at 3:30 on Sept. 12.
