Three earn Judges' first UAA Athlete of the Week honors for 2009-10

WALTHAM, Mass. - Three Brandeis University student-athletes have been recognized by the University Athletic Association (UAA) as Athlete of the Week for Sept. 21. Forward Tiffany Pacheco of Rehoboth, Mass., was honored for women's soccer, Paul Norton of Amherst, Mass., was honored for men's cross country and Rachel Rosman of Bonita Springs, Fla., was selected for women's tennis. All three are members of the junior class.

Pacheco was recognized as the UAA offensive player of the week in women's soccer, scoring three goals and adding three assists for a nine-point week as the Judges went 2-0-1. Pacheco In a 6-0 win over Bridgewater State College on Sept. 15, she scored two goals and added an assist for a career-high five points, assisting the game-winning goal in the eighth minute and scoring the team's second and fifth goals. After a scoreless draw with Roger Williams University on Sept. 17, Pacheco closed out the week scoring the game-winning goal in the 60th minute and tallying two assists in a 5-1 win over Clark University. For the season, Pacheco is second in the UAA in scoring with 13 points and tied for the association lead with five assists.

Norton, a co-captain, finished in third place out of 262 runners at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Shriner's Invitational on Sept. 19. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 24:43, just three seconds behind the top Division III finisher. The 13th-ranked Judges finished fourth out of 37 teams as they placed five runners in the top 50. It was the second year in a row that Norton finished third at UMass Dartmouth, and the second time he earned UAA Athlete of the Week honors for the feat.

Rosman, the No. 1 player for the Brandeis women's tennis team, finished 2-0 in a 9-0 victory over Simmons College on Sept. 13, winning 7-6, 6-0 at first singles and teaming up with fellow junior Mackenzie Gallegos of Friendswood, Texas, to post an 8-1 win at first doubles. At the Division III ITA New England Regional Championships, held at MIT Sept. 18-20, she reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jennifer Ouyang of Amherst College and a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Rebecca Stone of Babson College, before falling in a third-set super-tiebreaker to the eighth seeded Meghan McCooey from Tufts University 6-4, 4-6, 7-10. In doubles at the ITA, Rosman and Gallegos dropped matches to the winners of the main draw and the consolation draw.

Pacheco is a 2007 graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School.

Norton is a 2007 graduate of Amherst Regional High School.

Rosman is a 2007 graduate of Estero High School.
