Late OT goal sinks women's soccer at Bowdoin, 1-0

BRUNSWICK, Maine (courtesy Bowdoin College sports information) -- The Brandeis women's soccer team was five minutes from its third scoreless draw of the season, but Bowdoin College's Tiernan Cutler tallied on a corner kick to give the host Polar Bears a 1-0 win over the Judges in non-conference action Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Bowdoin improves to 7-5-0 this season. Brandeis falls to 7-5-3 with the loss.

After a scoreless regulation and first overtime, the game-winning tally was found exactly five minutes into the second extra session. Bowdoin's Celeste Swain played Bowdoin's eighth corner kick of the day perfectly to the center of the box, where Brandeis senior goaltender Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) got a hand on it. The ball deflected off the keeper's hands to Bowdoin's Stacie Sammott, who tapped it back to Cutler. The junior blasted a shot into an open net to give the hosts their second overtime victory in as many chances this season. Brandeis falls to 0-2-3 in five overtime games this year.

The teams traded several good chances over the course of the game, including a pair of great chances late in regulation. With 17 minutes to go, Brandeis junior Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn./Staples) hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Rosenzweig made a nice shot on a chance with six minutes to go on Sammott to preserve the deadlock.

Kat Flaherty posted her fourth shutout of the campaign thanks to an eight-save performance for Bowdoin. Rosenzweig stopped a season-high nine shots for the Judges in defeat.
