Women's soccer suffers 1-0 loss at Case in UAA opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For the second-straight game, despite outshooting their opponent, the Brandeis women's soccer team suffered a one-goal loss, falling by a 1-0 score at Case Western Reserve. It was the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.

Brandeis (5-3-2, 0-1-0 UAA) dominated the first half, outshooting the Spartans (5-3-2, 1-0-0 UAA) by a 9-2 margin. Most of the action came either early or late in the half, with Case sophomore netminder Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill.) making three saves between the 13th and 19th minute. Kennedy stopped Brandeis senior Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) twice and junior leading scorer Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Reg.) once. The Judges also got off three shots in the 5:01, but Kennedy denied Gorenkoff once again and Pacheco put shots high and wide.

In the second half, Brandeis sophomore Jaclyn Weinstein (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) took over for senior Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River), and the Spartans were able to take advantage of the newcomer. In the 55th minute, senior midfielder Caroline Garber (Cincinatti, Ohio) potted a shot from just outside the goalie box on a feed from junior Ana Aruda (Ann Arbor, Mich.) for the game-winner. The Judges kept up the pressure, outshooting the hosts, 4-1, the rest of the way. Weinstein made one more save, while Kennedy had one second-half stop and Case defenders were able to get in front of two Brandeis shots.

Rosenzweig had one save in the first half, while Weinstein had just one stop as well. Kennedy blanked the Judges with five stops.

Brandeis is next in action on Wednesday afternoon at Tufts University at 4 p.m. before opening their home UAA slate against Rochester a week from today.
