Rosenzweig sets career victory and shutout records as Judges stun No. 16 Chicago, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University senior netminder Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) made eight saves, one shy of her season-high, to lead the host Judges to a 2-0 upset of the 16th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Gordon Field today. With the win, Rosenzweig set Brandeis's career records with her 35th career victory and 20th career shutout.

Brandeis (8-6-3, 2-3-1 UAA) clinched a .500 record thanks to a pair of first-half goals. Junior forward Sofia Vallone (Westport, Conn./Staples) scored the only goal the Judges would need in the 33rd minute. Senior forward Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) registered her team-leading seventh assist of the season on the cross, which Vallone buried in the bottom left of the net for her fifth goal of the campaign. It was also her second game-winner of the season.

The Judges struck again less than seven minutes later. In the 40th minute, junior forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) took advantage of a misplay by Maroon sophomore goalie Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), putting the ball in the upper right. It was Pacheco's seventh of the season, second-most on the team.

Chicago (13-3-1, 3-2-1 UAA) matched the Judges shot-for-shot, with both teams taking 14 attempts on net. The Maroons' best attempts came early the second half, when Rosenzweig turned away junior Kate Manuelli (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) and senior Claire Gill (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Kings Acad.) on consecutive headers in the 52nd and 53rd minutes.

With her 35th win, Rosenzweig passed Natasha Pieciak '08, who earned her 34 wins between 2002 and 2004, on the career victory list, while surpassing Justine McBride '92 with her 20th shutout. Rosenzweig handed UC its first regular-season shutout in 23 games, dating back to the last meeting between the two schools last Oct. 18, when she shut out the Maroons, 1-0, in Chicago.

Brandeis wraps up their regular season next Saturday afternoon against rival New York University at 1:30 p.m.
