PITTSBURGH, Pa. (courtesy CMU sports information)-- Sophomore midfielder Mimi Theodore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) got the Brandeis women's soccer team's first goal in University Athletic Association (UAA) play at the 65:26 mark, but host Carnegie Mellon answered less than two minutes later and neither team was able to find the back of the net again as the Judges and Tartans battled to a 1-1 tie in Pittsburgh tonight. Brandeis moves to 6-4-3 on the season, 0-2-1 in the UAA. CMU goes to 5-5-2, 0-1-2.
Tartan freshman Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove
North) had the best opportunity of a scoreless first half. The
Tartan midfielder had a shot that skimmed the top of the crossbar
in the 42nd minute of play. The Tartans managed six shots in the
half while the Judges had four. Brandeis held the edge with three
of its shots on goal to the Cardinal and Gray’s two after 45
minutes of action.
Theodore broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute. Theodore
broke through two defenders and found the back of the net behind
Tartan junior keeper Anya Rosen (La Canada, Calif.). It was
Theodore's team-leading sixth goal of the season, tying her for the
team lead with 16 points.
The Tartans wasted little time answering the Judges goal, as 1:53
later sophomore Elsa Wu (Ellicott Ciy, Md./Centennial) scored her
team-leading sixth goal. Wu took a deflection in the box and tapped
it in the net past Brandeis senior keeper Hillary
Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River).
The score remained tied as the game went into overtime. Rosen
stopped Brandeis senior forward Melissa Gorenkoff
(Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) twice in first three minutes of the extra
sessions. In the 94th minute, Tartan sophomore Nicole Bayley
(Campbell, Calif./Westmont) had a chance to end the game, but
Rosenzweig made a diving game-saving stop, one of six stops on the
evening. Rosen had seven saves for CMU.
Brandeis's next contest is a UAA game at Emory University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Carnegie Mellon hosts NYU at the same time.
