SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (information used from a Springfield College release) -- Brandeis University senior goalkeeper Hillary Rosenzweig (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) recorded her 17th career shutout today as the Judges battled with Springfield College to a scoreless draw. The Pride entered the game ranked No. 18 in the nation in Division III women's soccer according to the NSCAA. The Judges move to 2-1-1 on the season, while Springfield's record is now 3-0-1.
Rosenzweig and Pride netminder Hannah McDougle each had four saves in the tie. Rosenzweig is now two shy of the school record for career shutouts. The Judges owned a 16-14 advantage in shots, while the Pride earned 10 corner kicks to Brandeis's four.
Brandeis nearly scored with 28 minutes remaining in the first
half as a mix up in communication the Pride backline left Brandeis
junior forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth,
Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Reg.) with a look at a wide open net.
However, her bid from 20 yards out sailed just left, as the game
remained scoreless.
The teams played a very even first half with each totaling seven
shots and each goalkeeper recording a pair of saves.
Springfield’s best scoring chance in the second half came
with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Pride was awarded a
free kick at the top of the box but was unable to convert as Katie
Mantie’s shot sailed above the crossbar. Neither team could
record a goal in regulation as the game headed for overtime
The Pride nearly ended the game three minutes into the first
overtime session as Mantie had a terrific scoring chance after she
collected a loose ball from 20 yards. Mantie dribbled in one on one
with Rosenzweig, but her shot from six yards out went high.
The Judges responded with a flurry of chances down at the other end
of the field for the rest of the first overtime, but were unable to
find the back of the net. Sophomore Alanna Torre
(Weston, Fla./American Heritage School) put the Judges' only shot
on net of the extra sessions in the 105th minute. The best chance
in the second overtime for Springfield came off a corner kick with
2:25 remaining. Springfield's Jen Courossi had a great look at the
goal from eight yards out but her shot also sailed high. Sophomore
Mimi Theodore (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) had the
game's last scoring opportunity with a header in the final minute
of play, but could not put it on net.
The Judges return home to Gordon Field for their next contest when they take on Bridgewater State College at 4 p.m.
