BRUNSWICK, Maine (from a Bowdoin College press release) - The Bowdoin College women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals and survived a late rally by Brandeis in a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1-1 with the win while the Judges drop to 2-4-0 on the season.

Brandeis controlled the pace of play for a good portion of the opening stanza, taking seven of the game's first eight shots. Bowdoin made a late push as Ellery Gould had a trio of great chances just miss the mark, including one that hit the post late in the first half, sending the game scoreless into intermission.

Bowdoin scored twice in a span of 9:26 midway through the second period to take control of the game. Stacie Sammott put the Polar Bears on the board at 59:46, finishing off a bouncing ball in the box. Gould gave Bowdoin a crucial insurance goal at 69:12, finishing off a nifty centering pass from Amanda Kinneston to make it a two-goal game. The tally moved Gould to within two scores of tying the program's all-time goal-scoring mark.

Brandeis cut into the advantage with less than seven minutes remaining when rookie Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) accepted a long, low cross from classmate Corinne Bortniker (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and tapped it inside the far post at 83:31. The goal snapped a three-match scoreless streak for the Judges, but they could get no closer. Bowdoin's Louise Johnson made five saves in net to seal the win. Rookie Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood)  had two goals and four saves, playing the first 73 minutes in goal for Brandeis before giving way to junior Francine Kofinas (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West), who allowed no goals and made two saves.

Bowdoin's win continued the see-saw rivalry between the two schools since they resumed playing in 2005 after a 12-year break. Since 2005 the teams have traded wins each season with Bowdoin winning in odd years ('05, '07, '09, '11) and Brandeis winning in even years ('06, '08, '10). Bowdoin holds a 6-3 edge overall in the series history.
