PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss in a University Athletic Association contest at Carnegie Mellon today. The Judges fall to 6-10-2 overall, 0-5-1 in the  UAA, while the Tartans improve to 9-6, 3-3 UAA.

CMU dominated play in the first half, outshooting Brandeis by a 14-1 margin, but junior goalkeeper Francine Kofinas (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) kept the hosts off the board with three saves, including one on sophomore back Rachel Contopolous (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) in the the last minute of play to keep the game scoreless. Brandeis's only shot in the first half half came off the foot of rookie midfielder Alyssa Fenenbock (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Reg.) in the 35th minute.

Facing Brandeis rookie Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) in the second half, the Tartans came out strong, getting off a pair of early shots and forcing the Judges' freshman to make three early saves. While Brandeis was able to get some pressure on CMU sophomore Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit CDS) in the form of a 54th-minute shot by sophomore back Kelly Peterson (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake), their first shot on goal of the game, it was the Tartans who finally struck in the 61st minute. Contopolous sent a corner kick into the box, and rookie forward Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) was there to convert her sixth goal of the season.

The Judges increased their pressure after the goal, outshooting Carnegie Mellon, 8-2, over the next 27 minutes, but Albi was up to the task, making five saves in that stretch. That included two stops on Judge sophomore Hilary Andrews (New Bedford, Mass./Bedford) in the 67th and 73rd minutes. CMU nearly doubled the lead twice, but the Tartans hit a crossbar in the 64th minute and the post in the 88th minute, with the rebound pushed wide on the latter.

Brandeis and CMU both tied in shots in the second  half, 9-9, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. For the game, the shooting edge was 23-10 in favor of CMU, who also owned a 8-4 lead in corner kicks. Kofinas finished with three saves and four for Savuto, who suffered the loss. Albi made six stops for the shutout.

Brandeis will have one last chance to earn a UAA win next weekend when the Judges play host to NYU Saturday at 2:30 p.m., while the Tartans travel to Emory for a 1:30 start on the same day.
