WALTHAM, Mass. — Sophomore Holly Szafran (Newton, Mass./Newton North) scored a career-high six points on two goals and two assists, while junior forward Dara Spital (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) added her second and third goals and first assist of the season as the Brandeis University women's soccer team rolled past visiting Clark University, 6-0, in a non-conference matchup today. The Judges, ranked 12th in Division III, improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Cougars' record is even at 1-1.

Brandeis got all the scoring they needed in the 11th minute as a result of some nifty passing. Junior Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) and Szafran connected some nifty passes along the left sideline. Szafran then found Spital streaking down the middle of the field, and the junior connected for what would prove to be her 10th career game-winning goal.

Szafran notched her first goal of the game and the season 5:08 later, taking a left-sideline throw-in from senior midfielder Mary Shimko (Bay Village, Ohio/Lake Ridge Acad.). Szafran lofted a shot from 35 yards out, putting it just under the crossbar and over the Clark goalkeeper for her sixth career goal.

Edalati got in on the scoring act in the 23rd minute, when she collected a pass from Szafran, dribbled through the box and fired a shot low into the right netting. Rookie Cidney Moscovitch (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Gables) rounded out the first-half scoring in the 33rd minute, when she took advantage of a Cougar miscue. Moscovitch took a deflected ball and dribbled in on net for her first collegiate goal.

Brandeis tacked on two early second-half goals. Spital's second of the day and the 16th of her career came in the 53rd minute out of a scrum in front of the net. Szafran closed out her six-point day just 3:04 later taking a terrific through-ball from Spital and one-timing it home.

Szafran now has seven goals and five assists for 19 points in her career after her second collegiate two-goal game and first with two assists. With a career-best five points on the day, Spital now has 38 for her career. It was her fifth career multi-goal game.

In goal, Clark sophomore Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) had nine saves in the losing effort. Brandeis junior Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) played the first half for the Judges, while sophomore Katy Lehmann (Houston, Texas) and senior Leah Sax (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) split time in the second. None were called on to make a save as the Judges owned a 29-1 shot advantage.

Brandeis plays its first road game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Lasell College at 1 p.m. in a rematch of a second-round NCAA Tournament game from 2012. The Judges won that contest, 3-0. Clark plays host to Framingham State at the same time.
