WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University women's soccer junior defender Michaela Friedman of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., has been selected as a third-team All-American by D3Soccer.com.
Friedman had previously been named a first-team All-New England honoree by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). She helped anchor a Judge defense that set a school record for fewest goals allowed (10) and lowest goals-against average (0.44). The Judges ranked 12th in all of NCAA Division III in GAA, while their 13 shutouts in 22 games ranked 34th in shutout percentage (59.1%). Friedman did not score any points this season, but she did deliver the penalty kick that helped the Judges advance into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament after a tie with Amherst College.
Friedman is the sixth All-American in Brandeis women's soccer history and the second defender to be honored, joining Brandeis Hall of Famer Carmen Bumgarner '91. Friedman is Brandeis's first All-American since 2012 and the first named by D3Soccer.com – the previous five were NSCAA selections.
In head coach Denise Dallamora's 36th season on the sidelines, the Brandeis women's soccer team finished the season ranked No. 14 in Division III by D3Soccer with a 15-3-4 record, one win shy of tying the program mark for wins in a season. The Judges earned a berth in the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row and fourth time in six seasons. They defeated Western Connecticut State University, 1-0, in the first round, then advanced past #24 Amherst College in the second round, 3-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in double overtime. Brandeis was knocked off by fourth-ranked William Smith College, 1-0, in overtime in the Sweet 16.
