WALTHAM, Massachusetts — The Brandeis University women's soccer team, ranked 13th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Division III national poll, got the 2016 season off to a fine start tonight with a 1-0 victory over visiting MIT in a non-conference contest on Gordon Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges got all the scoring they would need in the 27th minute.
- After the MIT defense cleared the ball, Brandeis got a series of nice touches down the left sideline.
- The ball made its way to sophomore Sam Volpe (Groton, Massachusetts/Groton School) who carried it to the end line and cut inside her defender towards goal.
- Volpe found senior Lea McDaniel (Phoenix, Ariz./Chaparral) streaking towards goal. McDaniel knocked the ball into a wide-open net for the game's only score.
McDANIEL AND VOLPE
- The goal was McDaniel's 11th of her career and the fifth game-winner.
- McDaniel let all players with six shots, four of which were on goal.
- Volpe's assist was her first collegiate point.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis outshot MIT, 15-11, for the game. Brandeis owned the shots in the first half, 14-5, but the Engineers had a 6-1 advantage in the second.
- Senior Alexis Grossman (Syosset, New York/Syosset) made eight saves – four in each half.
- Grossman's best save preserved the tie in the 80th minute, when she made a one-handed stop on Engineer Allie Werner's shot at the far post on a set play.
- MIT senior Lauren Ullman had five saves in the losing effort.
- Engineer sophomore defender Hailey Nichols cleared a McDaniel shot off the line during a scrum in the 16th minute.
THE SERIES
- Brandeis improves to 23-9-3 all-time against MIT.
- It was the sixth one-goal game in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
- Brandeis is 1-0 on the season, MIT falls to 0-1.
UP NEXT
- Brandeis takes on Lasell College at home on Sunday at 11 a.m.
- MIT is at Worcester State on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
