WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten tonight as the Judges suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Lesley University Lynx on Gordon Field tonight. With the loss, the Judges – ranked No. 10 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and No. 13 by D3soccer.com – fall to 8-1 on the season, while Lesley improves to 7-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandeis had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting Lesley, 10-5, including 5-3 in shots on goal.
- On the first shot of the second half, the Lynx connected for the game's only goal. In the 51st minute, senior Jordan Mitchell (Sachse, Texas / Sachse) dribbled a ball into space and launched a shot from about 30 yards out. It dipped just under the crossbar and out of the reach of Brandeis junior Sierra Dana (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East). The goal was Mitchell's fourth of the season.
- Brandeis put on some pressure over the next five minutes, earning three straight corner kicks, but were unable to break through.
- Lesley junior Brittany Gaan (Bellevue, Wash / Bellevue) was terrific in goal for the visitors, including making a diving stop at the far left post in the 61st minute on Brandeis senior Julia Matson (Rockland, Mass./Rockland).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis finished with a 20-11 edge in shots, including 8-5 in shots on goal. The Judges also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- Gaan made a season-high eight saves in the win, posting her fourth shutout in as many starts.
- Dana had four saves for Brandeis.
- The Judges saw their eight-game winning streak. They had been one of the final six teams in Division III women's soccer that were unbeaten and untied.
- Brandeis was 7-0-1 in its previous eight meetings with Lesley.
