WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University women's soccer junior Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) scored the game-winning goal midway through the first half tonight as the Judges picked up a key 1-0 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory on Gordon Field. With the win, the Judges improve to 9-4-2 overall on the season, 2-3 in the UAA, while the Eagles fall to 11-4-1, 2-3 UAA. Brandeis entered the game ranked 23rd in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches, while the Eagles were ranked 18th.

Brandeis controlled play for the balance of the game, outshooting Emory, 17-10 for the game, including 11-4 in the first half. The game-winning score came in the 30th minute. It started when sophomore forward Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) took an Emory turnover and dribbled down the left side deep into Eagle territory. Ngoma turned and sent a pass back to senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) about 18 yards out but still along the sideline. Carreiro took a dribble in toward the box before lofting a service with a couple of players in the box. Emory goalkeeper Emma Platt dove toward the far post, but Swan stepped in front of the ball to redirect it inside the near post for her second goal of the season. It was Swan's second career game-winner. The assist was Carreiro's eighth of the season, taking over the UAA lead, and the 15th of her career.

The Judges kept the pressure on for the final 15 minutes of the half, outshooting Emory, 4-2, with junior Morgan Clark (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) forcing Platt to make a diving save in the 43rd minute. Emory stepped up their attack in the second half, though Judge senior midfielder Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic) tested second-half netminder Emma Miller in the 54th minute.

The Eagles had several shots blocked in the middle part of the second before Aubrey Blanchard forced Brandeis rookie Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) to make a diving save in the 83rd minute. Bassan had one last save in the waning moments of the game to close out the clean sheet with three saves. It was Bassan's third shutout of the season. Platt had five saves for Emory in the first 45 minutes, while Miller made one in the second half.

The win for the Judges is their fourth in the last five games overall. They also snap a 10-match winless streak against Emory (0-6-4) dating back to 2009.

Brandeis will return to action on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with their home finale against the University of Rochester.
