WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team sent off their senior class in style today as the Judges defeated the visiting University of Rochester Yellowjackets, 2-1, in a University Athletic Association contest on Gordon Field. With the win, the Judges improve to 10-4-2 on the season overall, 3-3 in the UAA. Rochester falls to 6-5-4, 0-3-3 UAA.

Both Brandeis goals came through the Class of 2022. The Judges opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Sophomore forward Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) sent a beautiful cross from the left side of the 18-yard box. Classmate Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) drew the goalkeeper but touched it along to senior Daria Bakhtiari (Wilmington, Mass./Central Catholic), who tapped it into the wide-open net. The goal was Bakhtiari's team-leading seventh of the season and the 19th of her career.

After Brandeis outshot Rochester, 12-5, in the first half, the Yellowjackets came out with renewed energy and scored an equalizer 1:18 into the second stanza. After a corner kick, Liv Penegor headed a shot on goal that Brandeis first-year Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) made an initial save on, but Syd Coggins was there to clean up the rebound. It was Coggins' second goal of the season.

The visitors had two opportunities to take the lead after equalizing. They had a goal nullified by offsides in the 54th minute, and Penegor hit the crossbar in the 57th, with a teammate just missing out on a rebound opportunity. Brandeis went back on top in the 64th minute. Ngoma did a fantastic job to keep a ball from rolling over the touch line. She dribbled back to the right side of the 18-yard box and sent a cross to the far post, where senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) was waiting to redirect the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Carreiro's sixth of the campaign and the 15th of her career to go with 15 assists. With two assists on the day, Ngoma now has five on the campaign.

The Brandeis defense kept Rochester to just three shots after going ahead, but Bassan denied Jordyn Kowalkoski in the  75th minute, and junior Ruby Siegel (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) cleared a ball off the line in the 87th minute to maintain the lead.

For the game, the Judges outshot UR, 22-13, including 6-5 in shots on goal. Bassan made three saves for the victory, while Schechter had four stops in the losing effort.

With the win, the Judges reach the 10-win plateau for the ninth season in a row and the 14th time in the last 15 campaigns. Brandeis will end their 2021 regular season next Saturday morning at NYU at 11 a.m.
