CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team got a second-half goal from senior All-American Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional), but the Judges' late pressure was unable to find an equalizer as they dropped a 2-1 decision to MIT in the 2022 season opener for both teams.

RANKINGS AND RECORDS

  • Brandeis - #21 United Soccer Coaches, 0-1-0
  • MIT - #6 United Soccer Coaches, 1-0-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Engineers struck first with an early goal as Karenna Groff blasted one into the far-side netting on the second shot of the game in the eighth minute.
  • The game-winning goal came in the second half when the Engineers were awarded a penalty shot in the 52nd minute. Meagan Rowlett buried it to her right to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
  • Brandeis answered just over five minutes later in the 57th minute. Senior Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) took a deep free kick and put it into the 18-yard box. After a scramble, graduate student Bailey Cullen (Connellsville, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic), a transfer from Notre Dame, found Carreiro, who nudged the ball over the line for the goal.
  • The Judges had good pressure after the goal, but Cullen shot wide in the 74th minute and Carreiro was denied in the 86th.

  • MIT is the second-most-played opponent in Brandeis women's soccer history. This was the 41st meeting, and the Judges still lead the series, 24-13-4.
  • The game was a matchup of a second-round NCAA tournament game from 2021, which MIT won, 2-0.
